For most of the country, this summer has been the hottest on record. Mississippi temperatures are no exception. To keep you and your truck in good shape during those long-haul trips this season, follow these tips. If your semi could use some routine maintenance or repair, leave it to Warrior Diesel Services to handle the job.
Check the Battery
Hot weather can train your battery quickly by causing water to evaporate. Before starting a long trip, make sure your battery is fully functional. While the average battery lasts between three and five years, there are no hard and fast rules. To check how well your battery is working, start your engine and turn on the headlights. Rev the engine to see if the brightness of your headlights changes. If you notice any increases or decreases in brightness, tighten the terminals and connections. If this doesn’t help, have the battery looked at by a professional.
Inspect Tires
One of the most important areas to check in regard to safety is your tires. If your tires are worn-down, or over/underinflated, you risk having a blowout on the road. Hot weather can cause tire pressure to increase, so make sure to test them with an air pressure gauge before you drive.
Do a Fluid Inspection
Since hot weather causes fluid to evaporate, it’s wise to make sure you have enough oil, coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. Check all of these before a long journey to not risk any breakdowns.
Stay Hydrated
As the driver, keep yourself safe and alert by always having multiple bottles of water on hand. Try not to overdo it with caffeinated drinks; too much can have the opposite effect, leaving you dizzy and disoriented. For a hydrating snack, pack foods that contain a lot of water, such as watermelon or cucumber.
